Now Entering Double Digit Territory

I'll try to keep this brief since I have a ton of packing to do, but I knew I couldn't let today pass by without proper documentation.

I ran my first double digit run today! 10 miles! How's that for a rite of passage?!

I just woke up from an hour long nap and am scarfing down almost everything in the kitchen and there are no pictures because I already packed my camera but... 10 MILES!

My total time was around an hour and a half and my average pace was about 9:10min/miles (I'm too lazy to hook up my iPod, sorry!). I allowed myself a few 30-second walk/water/Honey Stinger breaks every two miles or so. I got super hungry around mile 8 (like last week) and then nearly bonked entering mile 9 (is my husband the only person who uses this term?), so I need to rethink my AM fueling strategy. I also ran with a new water bottle and I liked it a lot better than my old one.

The really neat thing about running on Saturday AM is that all the other distance runners are out doing their longs runs too! Because I kept doing the same 2-3 mile loop, I saw a lot of people multiple times. I felt like I was part of a really cool club. Also, Team in Training, San Jose Fit, and the Red Power Divas were all out doing group runs this morning as well. There were tons of runners on the trail! Usually this bothers me, but today I needed the encouragement of seeing a lot of other people out there.

I came home and did some yoga and then just lay on the floor for a little while, thinking about how incredible our bodies are. 2 months ago, I considered myself an athlete but never would have thought I could run 10 miles. And now, with training and a lot of mental preparation, I feel ready to tackle 13.1 next month (I still have four weeks, crazy!).

I think I underestimated how profoundly completing this run would affect me.

Running, for me, is almost as mental as it is physical. Every time I lace up my sneakers, I have to get past the mental roadblock of, "You can't do this." I don't know where that comes from, but it's a powerful sentiment and it has kept me from running for a long time. I will be so happy and so proud to cross the finish line at 13.1, but I think I'm even more happy and more proud about the weeks of preparation that went into getting me there.

I am a runner. I don't feel like I'm lying when I say that anymore.

  • What is one moment in your life that you felt the most proud of yourself (exercise, or otherwise)?

Today was a clearly a big one for me! I also remember feeling incredibly proud of myself when I walked across the stage to receive my Master's degree in 2008. Like today, I felt like I had a accomplished something that not everyone has the strength or the patience to accomplish!

Big hugs from my graduate advisor!

Fabulous Friday!

Note: I totally wrote this post last night and then got so caught up watching the season 2 finale of Buffy the Vampire Slayer on Netflix that I forgot to post it (I am a total nerd, I know)! Anyhow, here's a rundown of my fabulous Friday!

To quote my husband (which I do frequently), "today was a nice-ass day!"
Indeed, it was.

We woke up around 7, made breakfast (Bob's Red Mill 10-Grain Hot Cereal with mashed banana and maple cinnamon almond butter), and morning beverages (coffee for me, tea for him), then snuggled in our PJs and watched this week's Top Chef!

Does anyone else love Top Chef as much as we do? We have been totally addicted for multiple seasons. I'm not sure who I have pegged for the finals yet, but I do know that I do not like Angelo. He rubs me the wrong way. Any other opinions?

After getting our foodie fix, we went for a short hike at St. Joseph's Hill. This hike is always a super excuse for Brian to convince me to get lunch at his favorite cafe, The Purple Onion

We had a yummy lunch (B got the Norcal Nicoise Salad with seared Ahi tuna and I got a Thai Turkey Sandwich with basil and thai mayo - just a little, on the side!) and then headed home to putter around and pretend to get a lot of stuff done, when in reality I just laid out by the pool for a while. But hey, it's summer!

For dinner, I made a pasta bake, in an attempt to eat down the fridge before we leave on Sunday.

Meg's Veggie Pasta Bake
Ingredients
  • 3 cups veggies (I used 2 cups bell peppers, 1 cup yellow onion)
  • 16oz dried pasta
  • 2 jars pasta sauce
  • several handfuls fresh spinach
  • shredded cheese (I like mozzarella)
Method
  1. Preheat oven to 400.
  2. Dump your veggies in the bottom of a 9x13" baking dish (I usually put my baking dish on top of a cookie sheet to avoid spillage on the bottom of my oven)
  3. Top with pasta (I used a combo of spinach pasta and enriched pasta because I was trying to use up some leftovers).
  4. Top pasta with spinach and pour pasta sauce over top
  5. Cover with tinfoil and bake for 35-45 minutes. Stir at 20 minutes and then again at 10 minutes.
  6. Remove foil and top with cheese. Crank up the heat to 500 (or turn on your broiler). Cook for another few minutes until cheese is bubbly.
Brian had just gotten back from mountain biking with his dad. I think he liked it...

What a goober!

For dessert I enjoyed a handful of dark chocolate, dried cherry, almond, cashew, and pistachio trail mix. The perfect small bite!

My Life-Saver: TJ's Melange a Trois

I always try to have a bag or two of these frozen peppers in my freezer. Makes getting dinner on the table on a busy night (or a night when you don't have much in the way of groceries), so much easier! And they are super cheap - it costs less to buy one of these bags than it does to buy a fresh bell pepper!

What is your favorite time-saver in the kitchen? Bottled pasta sauce? Precut carrots? Frozen corn?

4 Warm-Ups for a Better Workout

I became "friends" with Active.com on Facebook last week and have been pleasantly surprised by their super-informative status updates.

Sidebar: How weird and crazy is the techno-world we live in?! I totally could never have imagined social networking when I was getting online using a dial-up modem to check my Juno email account in junior high!

Today they posted 4 Warm-Ups for a Better Workout. I am horribly guilty of cheating on my warmups, especially since static stretches are a no-no these days, so this was a nice reminder of what I should be doing!

  1. Hurdles - loosens tight hips
Balance on right leg (hold a chair or wall for support) with left leg bent so heel is behind you. Rotate left leg out to left side and forward as if drawing a circle with knee. Do 15 times, then switch legs.

  2. Windmills - relaxes shoulder and neck
Stand with arms at sides. Circle right arm up in front of you overhead, and then down behind you (like swimming the backstroke). Do 15 circles, then switch arms and repeat.

  3. Foot Rock-Overs - stretches calves
Stand with feet staggered, right foot flat about 12 inches behind left foot, left toes lifted off floor. Shift weight forward, simultaneously lowering left toes and rolling onto ball of right foot, lifting right heel. Reverse to start. Do 15 times, switch feet, and repeat.

  4. Heel Raises - strengthens calves
Stand with feet parallel, hip-width apart, hands on a chair or all for support, if needed. Lift heels and raise onto toes for two seconds, then lower. Do 15 times. Repeat with heels together and toes pointing out, then with toes together and heels out.

I'm going to start incorporating these into my pre-run warm-up routine (which pretty much consists of, um, nothing). Gearing up for a big 10-miler tomorrow - first double-digit run ever!

What is your warm-up routine?
